His Name On Their Hearts

Several years ago Holly and I completed the series, Growing Kids God's Way at our church. We thoroughly enjoyed the class and came away with so many useful tools in helping us raise our children. Through that experience, we became convicted to pray for our children in a new and different way. We began praying that God would write His name on their hearts. We realized the importance of getting the meaning of the cross into the hearts of our children so that it becomes a part of who they are, as opposed to audibly hearing the message, cognitively processing it, and accepting it as fact without the tools to apply it in their lives. Over the past few years we have seen evidence that this constant prayer is being answered. This note from the mother of one of Cara-Lee's kindergarten classmates came home in her backpack a few days ago:

"Travis and Holly,

Just wanted to let you know something Katie said yesterday. Katie failed to get her milk money but said it was okay because "Cara-Lee let God's light shine and gave me some of hers." I thought this was a compliment that should be shared..."

I am more proud of this one act than of any milestone she has made all year. She's getting it.

As parents, we have a tremendous responsibility in helping our children develop a heart for God. Developmentally, children need structure, discipline, nurturing, protection, guidance, and consistency. Providing each of these for our children helps them to trust us, and to develop a compassionate heart. In turn, they live their lives boldly shining their light.

Father, Thank you for my children. Thank you for the work you are doing on their hearts to make them Yours. Continue to give me guidance as I assist you with this monumental task with an eternal consequence.
